In response to tender questions for an NHS contract, Delta-Simons was instructed by the design agency Distraction (formally Design by Distraction) to calculate their business CO2eq footprint for the past three years.
Purpose
In response to tender questions for an NHS contract, Delta-Simons was instructed by the design agency Distraction (formally Design by Distraction), specialists in Graphic Design, Web Development and Marketing, to calculate their business CO2eq footprint for the past three years.
In this instance, the NHS requested carbon reporting from their supplier as a response to an overall target reduction in emissions for the NHS of 10% by 2015 from a 2007 baseline. The published 2010 carbon footprint of the entire NHS was 19.71 MtCO2eq – 65% of which is from their supply chain.
In the tender evaluation, a significant weighting was applied to environmental performance, with a maximum score being awarded where organisations demonstrated a greater than 20% improvement on current DEFRA figures of CO2eq emissions per £ turnover.
Outline / Scope of Works
Our sustainability team undertook a review of the tender documentation to determine the boundaries of the CO2eq footprint. The tender process required the reporting of Scope 1 (direct combustion of fuels), Scope 2 (emissions from electricity consumption) and Scope 3 (business travel and commuting) emissions in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.
We worked with the client to obtain the relevant gas, electricity, business mileage and employee commuting data from the business records and performed calculations to the required standards.
Outcome / Client Benefits
After performing the calculations, we were able to demonstrate that Distraction had achieved an improvement of greater than 20% on the DEFRA figure for their service sector for all three previous financial years, fully satisfying the criteria and achieving the maximum score for the CO2eq emissions evaluation within the overall tender submission.
