A motor vehicle assembly plant located in the North West of England, employing approximately 2,200 people, faced a significant challenge: ensuring the safety of its workforce while managing potential asbestos risks across its vast, operational facilities.

Large-scale industrial sites often face complex environmental and safety challenges, particularly when it comes to asbestos management. Our client’s car manufacturing plant, with its 400,000 sq metres of operational space, required a thorough evaluation of potential asbestos presence and airborne fibre levels to ensure worker safety and regulatory compliance.

The project stakeholders recognised the critical need for a detailed and accurate asbestos assessment that could inform ongoing management decisions and guide safety protocols. This would not only provide a clear understanding of the potential asbestos risks but also serve as an invaluable tool for developing effective mitigation strategies.

To achieve this, the project required a multi-faceted approach integrating various assessment techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) air monitoring. The team needed to conduct comprehensive asbestos management surveys, perform air sampling, and use advanced SEM analysis to detect even the lowest levels of airborne asbestos fibres.

Challenges

During this project, our team faced several challenges including:

  • Site Complexity: The site included various buildings and facilities, each with unique structural characteristics and potential asbestos-containing materials.
  • Operational Continuity: The site needed to remain fully operational during the assessment, requiring non-disruptive survey and sampling techniques.
  • Diverse Environments: The project covered manufacturing sites, office facilities, boiler rooms, and specialised areas like fire stations, each presenting unique sampling challenges.
  • Accuracy Requirements: The assessment demanded high levels of accuracy to ensure reliability for ongoing asbestos management decisions.
  • Safety Considerations: Sampling and air monitoring needed to be conducted without creating risks for the site’s 2,200 employees.

Solutions

To address these challenges, we implemented a comprehensive approach combining advanced SEM air monitoring with detailed on-site assessments:

  • Asbestos Management Surveys: Conducted thorough surveys across all 400,000 sq metres of the site, focusing on unique stanchion references to locate asbestos materials within precise 10m x 10m areas.
  • SEM Air Monitoring: Utilised state-of-the-art in house Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) to perform strategic air sampling, detecting asbestos fibres at concentrations as low as 0.0005 f/cm3 and providing detailed reports on airborne fibre types and concentrations.
  • Personal Monitoring: Carried out representative monitoring of surveyors during sampling works to ensure the effectiveness of control measures and maintain safety standards.
  • Data Management: Employed our bespoke online asbestos management software, NexGen, to integrate collected data with DWG plans and building layouts, providing the client with efficient access to comprehensive asbestos information.
  • Training and Awareness: Delivered UKATA Asbestos Awareness Training to 30 employees, enhancing their understanding of asbestos risks and management procedures in the workplace.

The comprehensive asbestos assessment and SEM air monitoring conducted by our specialist team yielded numerous positive outcomes for our client:

  • Detailed Asbestos Mapping: Precise location of asbestos-containing materials within 10m x 10m areas across the site.
  • Airborne Fibre Quantification: SEM analysis provided accurate data on airborne asbestos fibre levels, enabling informed risk assessments.
  • Operational Continuity: Non-disruptive assessment techniques allowed the site to remain fully operational throughout the project.
  • Enhanced Safety Protocols: Data informed the development of targeted asbestos management strategies.
  • Improved Awareness: Training provided to key employees enhanced overall site safety culture.
  • Efficient Data Management: Integration with our NexGen software enabled ongoing, efficient asbestos management.

Testimonials

It was really good to see the use of [Lucion’s] road/pavement recycling kit – something which I personally had not come across before. I think [Lucion’s] use of this innovation on one of our projects is a great initiative. This approach of work ticks many green boxes around recycling, carbon footprint and site efficiency.

Christopher Bright Senior Engineer

I recently attended Lucion’s Asbestos Awareness course at Severn Trent in Coventry. The course was led by Technical Consultant Adam Lomas, who demonstrated exceptional knowledge and expertise throughout the session.
Adam went above and beyond to ensure all participants fully understood the material. His breadth of knowledge across the subject matter was evident, and he handled questions with professionalism and clarity.

Adam is a real credit to Lucion, and I would highly recommend this course to anyone requiring asbestos awareness training.

I wanted to just say a quick thank you for the work you have put in on the Wimbledon site and, in particular, the call that we held with the ET SHE management team – They advised that they were really impressed with the points that you covered and how you came across (and by association Lucion) in your advice.

The new NexGen portal represents a significant advancement in how we manage our compliance data. The modern, intuitive interface is a massive upgrade, and the dashboard’s six-tile layout provides exactly what we need for our board reporting requirements.

The system’s enhanced tracking capabilities allow us to monitor changes efficiently, with the data intelligence providing precise insights into our compliance journey. The improved search functionality through ‘My Sites’ is particularly valuable, eliminating the need for complex coding and making data access straightforward. The ability to generate targeted compendiums for specific areas has streamlined our contractor communications significantly.

One of the standout features is the ‘My Jobs & Reports’ section, which provides clear visibility of upcoming work, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks. The user experience is notably improved, making data management and reporting more efficient than ever.
NexGen as a platform is a game-changer for our compliance management processes, delivering exactly what we needed in terms of functionality, accessibility, and user experience.
