Revit Model to Show Impact of Edinburgh Tram Line Extension

Share

Lucion was approached to carry out surveys and create a Revit model to demonstrate the impact of a proposed tram extension on the local area.

We were approached by our client to carry out surveys and create a Revit model to demonstrate the impact of a £207 million tram extension designed to allow passengers to travel 4.69km from the city center to the Newhaven waterfront.

Because the tram extension would run past apartments, the client wanted to visualize the effects the development would have on residential properties. They requested a Revit model showing apartment buildings along the new route as well as conventional topographic and 3D laser scanning surveys to identify other factors to consider.

A Revit model, created on Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, includes both precise data points and a visual representation of what is being surveyed. In this case, we plotted the apartment building models and the proposed tram line to analyse how the properties would be impacted by the new infrastructure.

In addition to the Revit modelling, we also carried out a conventional topographic survey, which is vital for informing the design process of any construction site.

Challenges

Some key challenges included accurately capturing and modelling the existing residential buildings along the proposed tram route, as well as ensuring the topographic survey precisely mapped the terrain and potential obstacles. Integrating the tram line plans with the survey data was also crucial for evaluating the true impact on surrounding areas.

Solutions

To meet the client’s needs, we deployed our skilled survey team to conduct detailed conventional topographic surveys along with 3D laser scanning of the route and apartment buildings. This field data was then combined with the tram extension plans within Revit to create an intelligent 3D model showing the existing conditions accurately represented alongside the new infrastructure.

Successful Project Delivery

By providing a Revit model visually demonstrating how the tram extension would affect local apartment buildings, along with comprehensive survey data, we enabled the client to properly assess the impacts and plan accordingly. Since our initial work, the tram line extension has been approved and is set for completion in spring 2023, allowing residents to benefit from the new public transportation option.

Our surveying and Revit modeling services were critical in evaluating this development’s effects on the surrounding urban environment. If you need professional surveying or BIM modeling for an upcoming construction or infrastructure project, get in touch to see how we can help ensure successful delivery.

Testimonials

It was really good to see the use of [Lucion’s] road/pavement recycling kit – something which I personally had not come across before. I think [Lucion’s] use of this innovation on one of our projects is a great initiative. This approach of work ticks many green boxes around recycling, carbon footprint and site efficiency.

Christopher Bright Senior Engineer

I recently attended Lucion’s Asbestos Awareness course at Severn Trent in Coventry. The course was led by Technical Consultant Adam Lomas, who demonstrated exceptional knowledge and expertise throughout the session.
Adam went above and beyond to ensure all participants fully understood the material. His breadth of knowledge across the subject matter was evident, and he handled questions with professionalism and clarity.

Adam is a real credit to Lucion, and I would highly recommend this course to anyone requiring asbestos awareness training.

I wanted to just say a quick thank you for the work you have put in on the Wimbledon site and, in particular, the call that we held with the ET SHE management team – They advised that they were really impressed with the points that you covered and how you came across (and by association Lucion) in your advice.

The new NexGen portal represents a significant advancement in how we manage our compliance data. The modern, intuitive interface is a massive upgrade, and the dashboard’s six-tile layout provides exactly what we need for our board reporting requirements.

The system’s enhanced tracking capabilities allow us to monitor changes efficiently, with the data intelligence providing precise insights into our compliance journey. The improved search functionality through ‘My Sites’ is particularly valuable, eliminating the need for complex coding and making data access straightforward. The ability to generate targeted compendiums for specific areas has streamlined our contractor communications significantly.

One of the standout features is the ‘My Jobs & Reports’ section, which provides clear visibility of upcoming work, ensuring nothing falls through the cracks. The user experience is notably improved, making data management and reporting more efficient than ever.
NexGen as a platform is a game-changer for our compliance management processes, delivering exactly what we needed in terms of functionality, accessibility, and user experience.
