When our specialist Petrochemical client needed to prepare their aromatics Plants for demolition, they faced the challenge of comprehensively identifying hazardous materials in a complex, operational petrochemical environment. Our specialist hazardous materials company Lucion Services Ltd was appointed to undertake a comprehensive pre-demolition survey of a north east based petrochemical facilities, demonstrating our expertise in handling complex industrial environments. This extensive project covered both operational and decommissioned plants, requiring meticulous planning and execution to ensure safety and minimal disruption.

Managing Hazardous Materials On Heavy Industry Sites

The survey scope encompassed a thorough assessment of asbestos materials following HSG 264 guidance, alongside the identification of cristobalite, Refractory Ceramic Fibres (RCF), and Ozone Depleting Substances in insulation. This comprehensive scope ensured all potential hazardous materials were identified and documented for safe demolition planning.

The project execution demonstrated Lucion’s capability to manage complex industrial surveys effectively. We deployed a dedicated site supervisor who maintained continuous presence, ensuring seamless communication with our client and stakeholders while managing up to five survey teams simultaneously. This strategic approach enabled us to complete the extensive survey scope while maintaining rigorous safety standards in a high-hazard environment.

Our methodology incorporated comprehensive pre-start meetings and site assessments, leading to the development of tailored method statements. Working with the petrochemical team, we conducted regular toolbox talks and safety briefings to keep all site staff aligned with safety protocols, while specialist rope access training was provided for high-level inspections, ensuring no area was left unexamined.

Quality Assurance

Our technical excellence was evidenced through our UKAS accredited laboratory analysis and dedicated Technical Lead oversight. We maintained a consistent 10-day turnaround on final reports while conducting continuous sample analysis throughout the programme. This approach ensured that stakeholders received timely, accurate information to inform their demolition planning process.

The project showcased our ability to deliver complex surveys in hazardous environments without compromising on quality or safety. We achieved zero safety incidents throughout the project duration while ensuring complete survey coverage of all specified areas.
