Radon Surveys FAQs

Lucion’s radon survey services are just the first step in our comprehensive radon risk management offering. In addition to accurate and reliable radon measurements, we provide expert guidance on risk assessments, mitigation strategies, and regulatory compliance. Our team can help you develop and implement a tailored radon management plan, ensuring the ongoing safety of your building occupants and your compliance with legal requirements. With Lucion as your partner, you can have peace of mind knowing that your radon risks are being effectively managed by experienced professionals.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers are responsible for ensuring the health and safety of their employees and others who access their workplace. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require the assessment of health and safety risks, including radon, for all workplaces located in radon-affected areas and all occupied below-ground workplaces in the UK. If radon levels exceed 300 Becquerels per cubic metre (Bq/m³) as an annual average, the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) apply, and the employer must take action to restrict exposure.

The duration of a radon survey depends on the specific requirements of the property and the type of survey being conducted. Short-term surveys can provide initial screening results within a few days, while long-term surveys, which are more accurate and reliable, typically last between 3 and 12 months to account for seasonal variations in radon levels.

Lucion’s radon surveys involve the use of advanced radon detectors and monitoring equipment to accurately measure radon concentrations in indoor air. Our experienced team of radiation protection specialists conducts both short-term and long-term surveys, depending on the specific needs of each property and client. We identify potential sources and pathways of radon entry and provide detailed reports with risk assessments and mitigation recommendations.

Radon surveys are essential for employers, property managers, and landlords who are responsible for ensuring the safety of their building occupants. Workplaces such as basements, mines, caves, and utility industry service ducts can have significant levels of radon, as can any above-ground workplaces in radon-affected areas. All workplaces, including factories, offices, shops, classrooms, nursing homes, residential care homes, and health centres, can be affected.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is colourless, odourless, and tasteless. It is formed by the decay of uranium in soil and rocks and can accumulate in buildings, posing a significant risk to human health through long-term exposure. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.
