DGSA FAQ

Lucion has particular expertise in the safe shipment of Class 7 radioactive materials, with our DGSAs working closely with our Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs) to provide a holistic approach to radiation safety and compliance.

Our team is well-versed in the specific requirements for packaging, labelling, documentation, and emergency response planning for radioactive materials, ensuring that your shipments are handled safely and in accordance with all relevant regulations.

Lucion’s DGSA services are designed to help clients navigate the complex regulatory landscape surrounding the transport of dangerous goods. By providing expert advice, conducting audits and inspections, and developing robust safety management systems, our DGSAs can help you ensure ongoing compliance with the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009 (as amended) and other relevant legislation, such as ADR, IMDG, and IATA regulations.

Lucion’s DGSAs are qualified to act in the UK under a Department for Transport-approved scheme certified by the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA).

To obtain this qualification, candidates must pass written examinations covering the relevant dangerous goods regulations and their practical application. The DGSA certificate is valid for 5 years and specifies the modes of transport and classes of dangerous goods that the DGSA is qualified to advise on.

Under the Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009 (as amended), any company that consigns, transports, packs, fills, loads, or unloads dangerous goods on a regular basis by road, rail, or inland waterway must appoint a DGSA. There are some exemptions to this requirement, such as if the goods are in limited quantities or are only transported occasionally.

A Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA) is a person certified to provide advice to companies involved in the transport of dangerous goods, to monitor compliance with legal requirements, and to ensure the preparation of an annual report. DGSAs play a crucial role in helping employers protect employees, the public, and the environment from the hazards posed by the transportation of dangerous goods.
