Brownfield Assessment FAQs

The main remediation techniques for contaminated soil include: 

  • Excavation and disposal: Removing contaminated soil from the site and disposing of it at a licensed waste facility, followed by backfilling with clean material. 
  • In-situ bioremediation: Using microorganisms to break down organic contaminants in the soil, either by stimulating the existing microbial population or by introducing new microorganisms. 
  • In-situ chemical oxidation: Injecting chemical oxidants, such as hydrogen peroxide or permanganate, into the soil to destroy organic contaminants through chemical reactions. 
  • Soil washing: Excavating contaminated soil and treating it with water, solvents, or other agents to remove contaminants, before returning the clean soil to the site. 
  • Solidification and stabilisation: Mixing contaminated soil with binding agents, such as cement or lime, to immobilise contaminants and prevent their leaching or migration. 
  • Thermal desorption: Heating contaminated soil to high temperatures to volatilise and extract organic contaminants, which are then captured and treated or destroyed. 
  • Phytoremediation: Using plants to absorb, accumulate, or degrade contaminants in the soil, either in-situ or ex-situ. 

The selection of the most appropriate remediation technique depends on factors such as the type and concentration of contaminants, the soil properties and site conditions, the remediation objectives and timescales, and the available budget and resources.
