Anthrax Sampling FAQs

Anthrax sampling, which includes anthrax contamination testing, is the process of collecting samples to test for the presence of bacillus anthracis. This can be completed for both medical and environmental purposes, to check if an individual has been infected with anthrax or to see if certain environmental surfaces or areas, like buildings or sites, are contaminated with anthrax.

Samples can be taken from anthrax spores to determine the presence of asbestos and implement management plans and strategies to limit the future risk of soil contamination or to conduct the demolition of buildings if necessary.

Anthrax is a serious disease caused by the bacillus anthracis bacteria. Anthrax in humans can be life-threatening if they contract the disease by coming into contact with infected animals or contaminated products. Anthrax can enter the human body through inhalation, ingestion or open cuts and wounds.

Anthrax can be found in building materials such as plaster, metals, paint samples, and soils. It is estimated to be a present contaminant in millions of buildings throughout the UK, where animal-containing products have been used during the building process, including in lime-based plasters.

Anthrax can also be found in soil. This commonly infects grazing animals like cattle, sheep and goats, which, although rare, can lead to anthrax in humans if an individual comes into contact with an infected animal.

Even if you do not suspect the presence of anthrax in your building or site, it is still imperative to conduct anthrax testing before any refurbishment or demolition works begin to ensure individuals are protected from possible life-threatening exposure.

Our team of environmental surveyors and analysts conduct anthrax testing and anthrax sampling worldwide by carrying out an on-site investigation before taking samples to our hazardous materials laboratory for in-depth testing.

If the presence of anthrax is found at your site, we can support you with management and strategy plans to remove anthrax and maintain safety for occupants and the environment.

At Lucion, we offer comprehensive anthrax sampling services, including testing, sampling, risk assessment, and consultancy. By working with our expert team, you can proactively identify and address anthrax risks, ensure compliance with regulations, and protect the health and safety of your employees, tenants, and the public.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) states that employers should take steps to control the potential hazardous risks of anthrax exposure by implementing a system to assess, control and review. Our team can help you meet these responsibilities and ensure compliance with regulations.
