The BBC News ‘File on 4’ investigation into the way two UK cruise ships were sold for scrap raises legitimate concerns around the handling of the ships at the end of their lives.

 

In particular, appropriate recycling is of paramount importance considering the hazardous waste likely to be on board and the need to protect yard workers and the environment.

As a result of the pandemic led meltdown in the cruise sector, there is a pressing need to deal with asbestos properly on ageing passenger ships such as the Marco Polo, as more of them are sold for recycling.

Having previously acted as approved partners to the European Commission, Lucion Experts can accurately build an internationally recognised Ship Recycling Plan (SRP) and Ship Recycling Facility Plan (SRFP), providing evidence-based advice to recyclers on how to deal safely and cleanly with hazardous material content. Part of our work has been to verify applications from Ship Recycling Facilities in order to feature on the European List of ship approved recycling facilities.

Our Consultants support and guide ship recyclers through the process of preparing for Shipyard Facilities Audit, including undertaking EU SRR Compliance Audits and producing internationally recognised SRPs and SRFPs to ensure compliance with the Hong Kong Conventions and the EU Ship Recycling Regulation.

Looking at how Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) is reshaping the funding and governance of shipping, with recycling second only to carbon reduction according to a recent report, the direction of travel is clear when it comes to attitudes towards ship recycling and Lucion is uniquely positioned to help shipowners and yards during the transition to safer, cleaner ship recycling.
