This partnership comes at a crucial time, as recent Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics reveal the continuing impact of historical asbestos exposure in Great Britain.

The Scale of the Challenge

According to the latest HSE statistics, 2,218 people died from mesothelioma in Great Britain in 2023. While this represents a decrease from 2,280 deaths in 2022 and is substantially lower than the average of 2,508 deaths per year over the period 2011-2020, it underscores the ongoing impact of this devastating disease.

The gender distribution of these deaths reflects the historical pattern of occupational exposure:

1,802 male deaths in 2023
416 female deaths in 2023

Mesothelioma UK, founded in 2004, provides essential specialist services through a national network of specialist nurses integrated within the NHS.

The charity delivers expert information and support for patients and carers, drives vital research initiatives, runs education and awareness programmes, and advocates for improved care and treatment options. This comprehensive approach ensures that those affected by mesothelioma receive the support they need at every stage of their journey.

While HSE projections suggest that annual deaths look to continue to decline during the 2020s, the need for support remains critical. Current mortality figures reflect asbestos exposures that typically occurred before the 1980s, with a latency period of at least 30 years between exposure and disease development.
