During the pandemic, the marine and offshore industry took a major hit as shipping companies and international travel closed down. Throughout 2022, the industry began to recover, with projections of positive, accelerated growth in 2023. This growth has been observed in hazardous materials, decommissioning activities (as reported by RINA) and the evolution of sustainability and ESG services in the industry. 

As a purpose-driven company, dedicated to protecting people from hazardous environments and protecting the environment from the impacts of people, the adaptations that the maritime industry has made align with our newly expanded, environmental and sustainability-focused, service lines and capacity, reinforcing marine vessel, offshore and marine infrastructure sectors as a strategic growth area for Lucion Group. To support this growth and develop these core sustainability service lines in the maritime industry, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Simon Hall as our Marine Business Development Manager.

Simon brings a wealth of experience in the merchant marine and offshore sectors having operated within the industry for over 17 years within various commercially focused roles for multiple, international maritime companies.

Skilled in establishing and implementing business development strategies in a customer-focused environment, Simon will be looking to onboard new clients and expand our market footprint through our newly developed maritime-focused services, encompassing merchant marine vessels, the offshore sector, and marine infrastructure. 

 

What New Service Has Lucion Group Developed?

Since the adoption of mandatory energy efficiency regulations for ships under MARPOL Annex VI – Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships, Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) for all ships (15 July 2011), the marine industry has seen significant developments in regulations relating to carbon reduction and sustainability over the past decade. 

In 2021, the International Maritime Organization IMO adopted mandatory carbon intensity requirements – the CII, EEXI, and SEEMP6, to cut the carbon intensity of international shipping and ‘set shipping on a course to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets established in the 2018 Initial IMO Strategy for Reducing GHG Emissions from Ships.’ (IMO, Further shipping GHG emission reduction measures adopted).

Last year, 2022, EEDI Phase 3 came into effect, earlier than the initial proposal of 2025, for certain ship types, bringing forward the requirement for new build ships to be significantly more energy efficient.

This year, 2023, sustainability in the marine industry has got off to a strong start with the implementation of further regulatory measures to address the decarbonization of shipping including;

  • Carbon intensity measures together with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII)
  • Adoption of Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) for new ships
  • Revision of the IMO GHG Strategy - aimed to reduce the carbon intensity of international shipping by 40% by 2030. 

As the number of climate-related disasters and global temperatures continue to rise, there’s a strong demand for Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) and Sustainability services in the maritime industry. As part of the Lucion Group, and through our global footprint with the Inogen Alliance, we deliver environmental risk management, ESG and sustainability services in multiple sectors to clients around the world. Through our established Environmental, ESG and Sustainability teams, we are encouraged to diversify our service offering to encompass our marine clients.

 

What’s Driving The Environmental, Sustainability Agenda?

Three key fundamentals are driving ship decarbonisation: 

  • Regulations and Regulatory Bodies - Safety of Life At Sea (SOLAS) and IMO
  • Capital and Funding - For investors and sellers looking to invest and divest their ship and offshore assets, implementing sustainability and carbon reduction measures is a surefire way to increase asset value. 
  • Transparency and Reputation - increased requirements on transparency and reporting of emissions throughout the supply chain are encouraging operators within the maritime industry to invest in sustainability and carbon reduction measures. This includes expectations from cargo owners, investors and financial institutions.

This is a key time within the maritime industry with ample scope for our teams to diversify their expertise and deliver our expanded range of marine services, with newly appointed Business Development Manager, Simon Hall, at the helm to guide us.

Speaking about his appointment, Simon commented; 

“With an addressable market of around 60,000 merchant vessels and 700 rigs globally, the marine and offshore industry is in a good state of recovery following the downturn experienced during the pandemic. 

2023 has seen the adoption of carbon intensity measures, the start of Carbon Intensity Data (CII) collection and the revision of the IMO initial GHG strategy. These new measures present our team with a clear opportunity to expand Lucion’s current marine service offering, encompassing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), sustainability and carbon reduction measures, and water testing in line with ballast water treatment system compliance.
