Lucion’s latest enhancement to NexGen portal delivers instant visibility of legionella risks, enabling companies to take immediate action and maintain complete oversight of their water hygiene compliance.
Following the major NexGen platform upgrade launched in November 2025, we are pleased to introduce a comprehensive legionella management module that extends the portal’s capabilities to encompass water hygiene compliance.
The new module leverages the enhanced platform infrastructure, including the redesigned interface, advanced data management capabilities, and mobile-optimised experience, to transform how our clients manage their legionella risk assessments and ongoing water hygiene compliance.
Building on a Stronger Foundation
The legionella module benefits from the 18 months of intensive development that went into the V2 upgrade, including the completely rebuilt user interface and enhanced data management capabilities that NexGen users are already experiencing.
Paul Hayball, Software Engineering Director at Lucion commented;
“The platform upgrade we launched in November created the perfect foundation for expanding NexGen’s capabilities, including legionella management.
By giving clients immediate access to critical water hygiene data and empowering them to manage their own compliance tracking, we’re helping our clients protect people and manage risk effectively whilst simplifying what can be a complex regulatory landscape.”
Immediate Risk Visibility When It Matters Most
The legionella module’s standout feature is its ability to notify clients instantly when site assessments are complete, allowing them to view critical recommendations immediately, without waiting for formal reports to be finalised.
Kieran Irving, who leads Lucion’s Water Hygiene & Treatment Management services at Lucion Services Ltd, spoke about this latest development, saying:
“The key differentiator is turnaround time. When our assessors complete work on site, they click a button, and our client is immediately notified automatically. Our client can look at not just recommendations, but all asset information prior to the report going through Quality Control (QC). The QC still happens, but clients get full visibility straight away. This mitigates the risk of critical information being delayed.”
For companies managing water hygiene compliance, this immediate visibility means they can begin addressing critical issues without delay, potentially preventing health risks and demonstrating proactive compliance management.
Complete Portfolio Oversight at Your Fingertips
The NexGen legionella module provides a comprehensive dashboard for companies to manage water hygiene compliance across single sites or entire property portfolios. Our clients can:
- View real-time recommendations with clear priority ratings (very high risk, high risk, medium risk and low risk) to focus resources on the most urgent issues
- Access detailed asset data instantly without waiting for formal reports, this includes all information from; calorifier’s, cold water storage tank’s, dead legs, infrequently used outlets, asset information etc
- Track compliance status with a dashboard showing percentage completion of recommendations across all sites
- Search and filter sites to quickly access specific locations within large portfolios
- Sign off completed actions to update compliance tracking in real-time
- Access all documentation including reports, certificates, and professionally drawn CAD building schematics through the centralised File Store
In addition to the above, Kieran reveals a key feature in NexGen that enables self-management of legionella risks:
“Beyond providing instant visibility of legionella risk assessments, NexGen enables our clients to streamline their ongoing water hygiene compliance management.
When our risk assessments identify infrequently used outlets, a common legionella risk, these automatically populate the monitoring section of the portal, allowing clients to manage and record their weekly flushing checks through the platform without the need for paper documentation.
The mobile-optimised interface means responsible persons can access water hygiene data and complete monitoring tasks from anywhere, making compliance management more flexible and efficient for companies managing multiple sites.”
Quality Standards That Exceed Industry Requirements
Our team’s commitment to quality is evident throughout the platform. All building schematics are professionally drawn by the company’s CAD team following HSG 274 and British Standard BS 8580-1:2019 for risk assessing, even when clients provide their own building drawings.
This attention to detail ensures our clients receive documentation that not only meets regulatory requirements but provides clear, accurate information for managing their water systems effectively.
The module’s development was partly driven by rigorous requirements from the Legionella Control Association (LCA), which scrutinised how Lucion delivers risk assessments and provides reports during their accreditation process. We are pleased to say we successfully achieved LCA membership, with NexGen playing a key role in demonstrating robust processes that ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
Why Water Hygiene Compliance Matters
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act (HASAWA) and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations, any company that owns, operates, or manages a property with a water supply used as a place of business must undertake a legionella risk assessment.
Legionella bacteria causes Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal respiratory tract infection. The risks are greatest where there are stored water systems (tanks, cylinders), recirculated water, stagnant water systems including dead legs and infrequently used outlets, or air conditioning systems with evaporative condensers. Poor maintenance of water systems also results in many failures.
The Approved Code of Practice L8 (ACOP:L8) published by the Health and Safety Executive has a special legal status. Although it is a guidance document, where not followed or alternative methods utilised, a court of law may find you at fault. The ACOP L8 states;
- The Duty Holder is responsible for a suitable and sufficient Legionella Risk Assessment (LRA) is to be carried out by competent individual
- The industry standard for a LRA is every 2 years or as per paragraph 47 that states the LRA is to be reviewed if;
- changes to the water system or its use;
- changes to the use of the building in which the water system is installed
- the availability of new information about risks or control measures
- the results of checks indicating that control measures are no longer effective
- changes to key personnel
- a case of legionnaires’ disease/legionellosis associated with the system.
All properties with more then 2 employees or used as a place of business require legionella risk assessments, making this a universal compliance requirement for commercial property owners and operators, a natural expansion to NexGen, which already facilitates the management of a vast suite of hazardous materials and environmental compliance risks.
