We're delighted to share some remarkable achievements from our Gateshead based Hazardous Materials laboratory team, highlighting our commitment to professional development and technical excellence in analytical services.
New Generation of Expert Asbestos Analysts
Three of our newest team members – Erin Bowmer, Tom Dunn, and Mohammad Rahman – have successfully completed their qualifications to become authorised asbestos bulk analysts. Since joining in April as trainees, they have demonstrated exceptional dedication to learning and professional growth.
“The recent achievements in our laboratory reflect our ongoing commitment to excellence and professional development.
Our investment in both our people and advanced technology ensures we continue to deliver the highest quality analytical services to our clients.”
– Nichola Byron, Laboratory Manager
Erin, who brings a strong academic background with degrees in Forensic Science and Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology, shares her experience;
“I’ve found the training period really enjoyable, despite a large work and study workload! I am now looking forward to expanding my skillset as an asbestos lab analyst and exploring other areas of analysis.”
The success of our new analysts demonstrates the effectiveness of our comprehensive training program, where experienced team members mentor newcomers in our UKAS accredited laboratory (Testing Laboratory No. 2569 and Inspection Body No. 0263).
Investing in Future Expertise
Adding to our celebrations, Lucy Hails, one of our accomplished Bulk Analysts, has embarked on an exciting Laboratory Technician Applied Chemistry Degree Apprenticeship.
This progression demonstrates our commitment to nurturing talent and expanding our analytical capabilities.
“I am absolutely loving the degree so far. I’ve got such a passion for chemistry and it’s really exciting to learn new things and expand my knowledge. I’ve always had an interest in chemistry, so this is something that I’ve always wanted to achieve.”
– Lucy Hails
Lucy’s apprenticeship will further strengthen our laboratory’s expertise, particularly in our advanced analytical capabilities, which include:
- State-of-the-art Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) – one of only three such facilities commercially available in the UK
- Comprehensive hazardous materials testing
- Detailed chemical analysis and characterisation
- Building on Technical Excellence
Our newly qualified analysts join a team working with cutting-edge technology, including our advanced SEM facility, which provides:
- Industry-leading magnification up to 200,000x for conclusive asbestos fibre identification
- Precision analysis capabilities far exceeding standard microscopy techniques
- The ability to detect asbestos fibres at levels as low as 0.0005 fibres/cm³
This combination of skilled analysts and advanced technology enables us to provide comprehensive testing services across a wide range of materials, supporting our clients’ compliance and safety requirements.
Comprehensive Laboratory Services
Our growing team delivers analysis across two key areas:
Hazardous Materials Testing
Operating as one of Europe’s largest accredited asbestos testing laboratories, our team provides expert analysis of:
- Asbestos in various materials
- Heavy metals in paints
- Environmental contaminants
Geotechnical Analysis
Through our Lucion Ground Engineering Geotechnical Laboratory (UKAS accredited Testing Laboratory No. 8180), we offer:
- Soil classification and strength testing
- Chemical analysis
- Compressibility testing
- Permeability assessment
Looking to the Future
These recent achievements reflect our ongoing commitment to developing both our people and our technical capabilities. Through continued investment in training, education, and advanced analytical techniques, we’re ensuring that our laboratory remains at the forefront of environmental and materials testing while nurturing the next generation of analytical experts.
“Whilst there has been a lot to take in, I feel like I’m gradually building my foundational understanding,” reflects Tom Dunn, one of our newly qualified analysts. “It’s rewarding to gradually put the technical aspects to use in the day-to-day work.”
Getting our trainee bulk analysts through their training has been a true team effort, with many experienced staff members providing guidance and mentorship. This collaborative approach to professional development ensures we maintain the highest standards while building a strong foundation for the future of our laboratory services.
