Lucion has been reappointed by Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (DBTH) to provide specialist asbestos surveying and consultancy services.

This latest win for our specialist asbestos management company, Lucion Services Ltd, comes at a pivotal time for the NHS, following the UK Government’s 2025 Budget announcement of significant capital investment in healthcare infrastructure. With £300 million in additional NHS capital investment and a commitment to maintaining public investment at the highest sustained level in four decades, NHS trusts across England are preparing to modernise and expand their estates.

As part of this transformation, robust asbestos management becomes increasingly critical to ensuring safe, compliant healthcare environments that support the Government’s ambitious 10 Year Health Plan.

Supporting a Leading Teaching Hospital Trust

DBTH is an acute NHS Foundation Trust and one of only six teaching hospitals in Yorkshire, working closely with the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. The Trust serves a population of more than 440,000 across South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, and surrounding areas through its three hospital sites:

  • Doncaster Royal Infirmary
  • Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop
  • Montagu Hospital in Mexborough

As a Foundation Trust, DBTH operates with greater autonomy whilst maintaining strict quality standards. The Trust’s vision – ‘Healthier Together – Delivering Exceptional Care for All’ – aligns with its commitment to working with stakeholders and partners to deliver high-quality services for the communities it serves.

Comprehensive Asbestos Management Across Live Healthcare Settings

Under the contract, Lucion will deliver a full suite of asbestos services across DBTH’s estate, including:

The contract requires meticulous coordination to minimise disruption to clinical services whilst maintaining the highest safety standards across busy emergency departments, operating theatres, patient wards, and specialist treatment areas.

Charlotte Lovewell, Client Relationship Manager at Lucion Services, added:

“Having worked closely with the DBTH estates team since 2021, we have a deep understanding of their operational requirements and the unique challenges of working across their three hospital sites. Our team is already familiar with the estate, access protocols, and the critical importance of maintaining business continuity in a 24/7 healthcare environment.

This enables us to hit the ground running from day one, delivering the seamless service that DBTH expects. I’m particularly proud of our emergency response performance – consistently attending site within two hours and delivering laboratory results within 24 hours. I’m looking forward to continuing to build on the strong relationships we’ve developed and supporting the Trust through their next phase of development.”

Proven Track Record in Healthcare Environments

Lucion Services Ltd brings extensive NHS experience, including long-term partnerships with multiple large NHS Foundation Trusts and placement on the NHS SBS Framework.

Neil Smethurst, Area Director at Lucion Services, commented:

“We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This reappointment is testament to our team’s dedication to delivering exceptional service in challenging healthcare environments.

As the NHS embarks on a period of significant infrastructure investment, with the Government committing £300 million in additional capital funding and setting out ambitious plans for 250 new Neighbourhood Health Centres, our role in ensuring safe, compliant estates has never been more important.

Our proven track record, combined with our innovative digital-first approach and 24/7 emergency response capability, positions us perfectly to support DBTH’s operational needs whilst minimising disruption to patient care.”

Supporting NHS Sustainability Goals

Lucion’s delivery model aligns with DBTH’s Green Plan 2025-28 and Net Zero objectives through:

  • Digital-first surveying methods eliminating paper waste
  • Intelligent route optimisation reducing CO2 emissions by 49 tonnes annually
  • ISO 14001 certified environmental management system
  • Use of eco-friendly decontamination products and reusable PPE
  • Laboratory switch from single-use plastic to reusable glass petri dishes, preventing over 100,000 plastic items from landfill annually
  • Strengthening Public Sector Capabilities

This contract win reinforces Lucion’s position as a trusted partner to the public sector, with particular strength in healthcare environments

As one of the UK’s largest specialist asbestos management providers, Lucion Services Ltd brings expertise through a nationwide network of BOHS-qualified Asbestos Surveyors and Analysts. With an estimated 1.5 million UK buildings still containing asbestos and approximately 5,000 asbestos-related deaths annually in Britain, effective asbestos management remains one of the UK’s most significant workplace health challenges – particularly in public buildings constructed before the material’s complete ban in 1999.
