Delta-Simons has become a member of the UK Environmental Law Association (UKELA), a UK forum established in 1988 to encourage collaboration between those interested in environmental law.The aim of UKELA is to influence and comment on the law as it’s formulated, as well as providing education around environmental law. UKELA counts leading environmental legal professionals, regulators and environmental practitioners in their membership, who bring a wealth of experience in the formulation and application of the full range of environmental law.
The benefits of membership were clear to Marcus Reynolds, EHS Associate: “Having attended a range of UKELA events over the years, and presenting at one London event on Environmental Permitting, membership will benefit Delta-Simons through collaboration and opportunities for education, while we can share our perspective and practical experience with UKELA and their members.”
Once the Brexit implementation period finishes on 31st December 2020, the UK government will be free to set its own environmental targets, policies and laws. It is possible that UK environmental legislation could become weaker and significantly diverge from that set by the EU. The draft UK Environment Bill, currently delayed, proposed significant changes to regulation of water resources, waste management, biodiversity and air quality, as well as establishing the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP). There is already some concern that the draft Bill text does not commit to maintaining standards of regulation and that the OEP will lack sufficient power to hold the government to account.
Delta-Simons look forward to future collaboration potential and helping to shape future environmental law in the UK, into the post-Brexit era.
