As the UK faces a mental health crisis costing 17 million working days and over 7000 lives annually, Lucion joins The Baton of Hope to make suicide prevention everyone's business.
According to the WHO, every year, 720,000 people globally die by suicide. In the UK in 2024, 7,147 deaths were registered where the cause was recorded as suicide. Behind these statistics are families torn apart, communities devastated, and workplaces forever changed.
The True Cost of Silence
Poor mental health costs UK employers £51 billion annually, with acute mental health conditions accounting for over 55% of all lost working days in the UK. Yet these figures only tell part of the story. They exclude the many people who don’t disclose the actual cause of their absence due to continuing stigma.
But the real cost isn’t measured in pounds or lost productivity. It’s measured in lives that could have been saved, conversations that never happened, and warning signs that went unnoticed because mental health remained a taboo subject in the workplace.
Which is why we are immensely proud to support the Baton of Hope.
The Baton of Hope’s Mission
The Baton of Hope exists because no one deserves to die by suicide. This national movement is determined to stand up to suicide by replacing silence with conversation, stigma with support, and reactive responses with proactive prevention.
The Workplace Pledge
The Baton of Hope’s Workplace Pledge provides employers with a practical framework to create psychologically safe workplaces.
Companies like Lucion who sign the pledge, commit to:
- Educate – Providing education, resources, and training on suicide awareness, prevention, and mental wellbeing through certified training delivered by registered healthcare professionals
- Unite – Creating communities where all those bereaved or affected by suicide can find support and connection
- Seek Change – Actively lobbying for changes to national guidelines, regulations, services, curriculums, and law
Making Mental Health a Workplace Priority
While workplaces are not legally required to meet any requirements around suicide prevention and awareness, The Baton of Hope’s framework provides companies with the tools to create genuinely supportive environments.
Lucion has signed The Baton of Hope’s Pledge as part of our commitment to address the mental health crisis in the construction and environmental sectors, as part of our wider Mental Health and Wellbeing Plan.
Carolyn Cole, Chief People Officer at Lucion commented on our latest commitment:
“Mental health is health. Just as we would never expect someone to work through a physical injury, we shouldn’t expect people to struggle in silence with their mental wellbeing.
Supporting The Baton of Hope is about making sure every single person in our industry knows that help is available, that they’re not alone, and that their life matters.”
Crisis in the Construction Industry
The construction sector faces a particularly acute crisis. Two construction workers die by suicide every day in the UK, a rate significantly higher than the national average and one that demands urgent action.
The statistics are stark, but they don’t have to be inevitable. Every organisation has the power to create a workplace where people feel safe to speak up, where warning signs are recognised, and where support is readily available.
Carolyn adds:
“Our well-being initiatives are integral to our business strategy. I’d like to actively encourage all businesses, especially those operating in the construction sector, to join us in moving from good intentions and verbatim to meaningful action. For the benefit of your teams, your workplace culture, and to build a more resilient organisation that can better serve clients, support communities, and contribute to positive industry change. And ensuring everyone gets home safe.”
