Over the past decade, there has been a shift from traditional surveying methods to more automated techniques and processes, like the introduction of drone and robotic technology for surveying. As technology continues to develop, AI surveys will become more commonplace in the industry to maximise the accuracy of data and the efficiency and speed of data collection.

Automation in Land Surveying

Initially, drone surveys faced some resistance, but they have become widely adopted within the surveying industry because they allow surveyors to collect data quickly and efficiently compared to traditional surveying methods. In land surveying, the use of machine learning algorithms has grown in recent years to effectively analyse data. Machine learning algorithms are used to automatically detect and map changes in land use over time, allowing for land surveyors to easily recognise areas that may be of interest or concern, and to provide clients with accurate data that enables them to make more informed decisions.

The Future of Land Surveying

The transformation of the surveying landscape because of AI is not entirely new. AI surveying encourages change of surveying methods by enhancing the accuracy, efficiency, and speed of data collection compared to traditional surveying techniques., As these technologies advance rapidly, more innovating applications of AI in surveying will become more common.

However, unlike some other industries, AI is not expected to replace the role of a surveyor. Instead, AI-powered software and tools will continue to help surveyors collect, process, and analyse large amounts of data, making it easier to map out land features, identify potential hazards, and assess the impact of development projects. AI’s machine learning algorithms are expected to advance further to analyse vast amounts of data to outline patterns and insights that could be missed by human surveyors. As well as transforming land surveying by using machine learning algorithms, AI is also expected to streamline the process of surveying by automating repetitive tasks such as data entry and processing, whilst also standardising the surveying process to allow for surveyors to easily share and access other data. AI has the potential to automate many of the processes involved in land surveying, enabling surveyors to work more efficiently, accurately, and safely. Although still considered to be in the early stages, AI survey technology is expected to revolutionise the land surveying field as it advances.
